“What I want to know is, how did they get a syringe past security?” Bishop waved a piece of steak about on the end of his fork.

Yuji had insisted on serving them dinner, even though he had dropped the pretence of being their flight attendant/pilot. The meal was probably the best Eva had ever had on a flight.

“I read in Keith Richards’ autobiography that he used to have the needle part as a hat pin,” Eva offered.

“That’s great, but neither of them was wearing a hat,” Loch said.

“And I’m pretty sure neither of them were members of the Rolling Stones, either,” Bishop added.

“What is your point?” Yuji asked, a little lost.

“No idea. But we’ve established that I wasn’t attacked by Keith Richards.” Eva took the last bite of her meal and slouched backwards, sated. “My question is, why aren’t there any female assassins?”

“What?”

“Everyone they’ve sent after me has been a bloke, no chicks,” she said.

“You want equality in your hit men?” Bishop asked.

“See? Hit men. It’s very sexist.”

“So you’re saying you want a female to kill you?” Loch asked.

“Well, no, I’d kick her arse too. I’d just like to see a bit of diversity, that’s all.”

“Is this how your conversations are normally conducted?” Yuji asked.

Eva shrugged. “Pretty much, yeah.”

“Are you sure you are all spies?” Eva wasn’t sure if Yuji was serious or not.

To change the subject, she asked if she could check out the equipment Yuji had with him to see if there was anything of use. She needed the distraction. As she and Yuji conversed, she’d noticed Loch and Bishop sitting next to one another in total silence.

Their rapport had not thawed at all. In fact, they both seemed to be covered in a thick layer of frost. It was odd: in all the time since they had left MI6, the two men hadn’t spoken to one another without Eva being part of the conversation. Eva shrugged. That was their issue. She had more pressing matters to deal with.

Bishop shifted uncomfortably in his chair and folded his arms. Loch mirrored his movements. Sneers were exchanged.

The MI6 operative gave the CIA agent a derisive look. “I hear you're an unmemorable lay.”

Mouth agape, Eva was about to issue an abusive rebuttal, but snapped her eyes shut and tried to focus on what Yuji was saying. This wasn’t her battle. Let the two men act out their adolescent mating ritual or whatever the hell it was.

A smirk appeared at the corner of Loch’s mouth. “I hear you’re an insufferable cad.”

Reacting as though Loch had commented on the pleasant weather, Bishop said, “I hear you’re a forgotten man.”

“I hear you've gone through more loose women than the clap.”

Bishop laughed. “You say that, but where did your little Cherry baby spend the night last night?”

Eva rose from her seat. “Alright you two, shut it down or I swear on Jimi Hendrix’s Fender Stratocaster I will open one of these doors and toss you both the fuck out. I don’t know why, but you two are carrying on like two dogs fighting over a bone and I’m not having it.
